DHS Innotech Develops World’s First Low-Carbon UHMWPE Protective Fiber Manufacturing Technology with Support from Taiwan’s A+ National R&D Program

DHS Innotech Co., Ltd. has announced that it has been selected for Taiwan’s A+ Corporate Innovative R&D Program under the Ministry of Economic Affairs to initiate the development of a low-carbon UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) protective fiber manufacturing technology.
The company aims to develop a new generation of protective materials that combine high strength, lightweight properties, and scalable mass production capability.
Unlike conventional international approaches that primarily rely on bio-based feedstocks or renewable energy integration to reduce carbon emissions, DHS Innotech focuses on process-level innovation in energy-intensive manufacturing stages. The initiative targets key bottlenecks in UHMWPE fiber production to improve both material performance and carbon efficiency, establishing a manufacturing pathway that integrates high performance with sustainability.

The global high-performance protective fiber market has long been dominated by a limited number of international manufacturers, resulting in a highly concentrated supply structure. In recent years, driven by global net-zero initiatives and rising demand from defense, law enforcement, aerospace, and advanced protective applications, the ability to balance performance, manufacturing efficiency, and low-carbon production has become a key priority for the advanced materials industry.
Current low-carbon UHMWPE fiber technologies mainly focus on feedstock substitution and renewable energy adoption to reduce lifecycle emissions. However, significant opportunities remain in reducing energy consumption in core processes such as solvent systems, coagulation extraction, and multi-stage drawing. This has made process innovation an important direction for next-generation high-performance fiber development.
DHS Innotech’s approach centers on integrating raw material formulation, fiber spinning, multi-stage drawing, and process optimization to address these high-energy-consuming stages. The company will work in collaboration with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) for future technical development and evaluation, with a long-term focus on scalability and industrial application potential.
The A+ Corporate Innovative R&D Program, administered by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, is a flagship national initiative supporting strategic industrial technology development. Selection under this program reflects recognition of DHS Innotech’s R&D capability and its long-term development strategy in advanced materials and low-carbon manufacturing technologies.
DHS Innotech emphasizes that the core value of this initiative lies not only in enhancing fiber strength, lightweight characteristics, and protective performance, but also in reducing energy consumption in high-energy manufacturing processes. This supports the development of a new generation UHMWPE protective fiber system that integrates high performance with low-carbon production, strengthening Taiwan’s advanced materials capability and global competitiveness.
Looking ahead, the technology is expected to be applied in defense protective equipment, high-risk law enforcement gear, aerospace composites, and advanced protective applications, with potential expansion into broader high-performance material markets.
As the program progresses and moves toward potential industrialization in the future, it is expected to drive approximately NT$50 million in R&D and industrial investment and may generate over NT$1 billion in output value, contributing to the advancement of Taiwan’s high-value materials industry and enhancing its global competitiveness in advanced protective materials.
